Da Vinci Colourisation Tutorial

No video? Get the DivX Web Player for Windows or Mac

I recently came first in a Worth1000 contest whose theme was to colourise one of Leonardo Da Vinci's line drawings. You can see that contest, and my entry by clicking here. I won't host the image here, as it's copyright The British Museum, and I obtained persmission to alter and colour it for the contest only.

However, some people were asking me how I went about it. So, I've made a short video tutorial on how I might go about colouring another one... using slightly different techniques. Perhaps the next time I do one of these you'll hear my voice... but for the moment captioned comments will have to do. There might be some typos in the captions, and some of them might be a bit off timing wise, but you should be able to follow what I'm getting at.

Testing some embedded DivX video

This is just a test to see if I can encode and embed some DivX video here. If you can't see anything then you will need the DivX Web Player from here.

Carrier WIP GIF

Here's a 700 pixel width version of the WIP for this image. Click for full size view.

Old Dragon PSD

Photoshop PSD with all the layers intact. I cropped 10% off the width and height, and reduced the overall width to 1000 pixels (from 3000)... But 1000 pixels should still be enough to see what's going on. When I reached the colouring stage of this I was working initially on a flattened greyscale of all the had come before... using a brush set to colour mode... that's why it may seem to jump to colour fairly swiftly. (41mb).
